Headline: Qualcomm Unveils AI-Driven Mobile Chips
Qualcomm, a leading global mobile phone chip supplier, announced today that it is adapting technology from its laptop chips to enhance mobile phone chips, with a particular focus on generative artificial intelligence tasks. The San Diego-based chip manufacturer is leveraging the expertise of former Apple engineers hired in 2021 to integrate its custom computing technology, known as "Oryon," into mobile phone chips for the first time.
This development is part of Qualcomm's strategy to bolster its presence in the artificial intelligence sector. Initially developed for laptop chips and currently supporting AI features in Microsoft's Windows, this technology will enhance the capabilities of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile phone chips. These chips are being redesigned to better handle AI-focused tasks such as image and text generation.
To support developers, Qualcomm plans to provide specialized tools that go beyond current offerings in Alphabet's Android operating system. These tools are designed to help software developers fully capitalize on the new features of the Snapdragon chip.
Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm's mobile division, emphasized the company's commitment to innovation in the AI sector, stating: "AI is an area where Google is making rapid advancements, but we also have our own technology to offer to end-user developers."
Several manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer, and Xiaomi, have agreed to incorporate Qualcomm's new chip into their devices. This collaboration marks an important step as Qualcomm continues to expand its technological footprint and meet the growing demand for AI-enabled mobile devices.
