The Amount of Checks Presented to Banks Increases
In the period from January to October 2024, the total amount of 14.4 million checks belonging to 556,000 issuers presented to banks was 6 trillion 299 billion TL. According to a statement made by the Banks Association of Turkey (TBB), in the same period compared to the previous year, the number of issuers (unique) increased by 3.7%. While the number of checks presented decreased by 1.4%, the amount of checks increased by 72%.
- The amount of checks returned for insufficient funds increased - In the period from January to October 2024, the total amount of 223,000 checks belonging to 23,700 issuers that were returned due to insufficient funds at the time of presentation to banks was 141 billion TL. Additionally, 39,000 checks belonging to 14,000 issuers with a total amount of 22.4 billion TL that were previously returned were later paid.
In October, the ratio of checks returned for insufficient funds to checks presented to banks was 2.2% in terms of amount and 1.6% in terms of quantity. During the period from January to October 2024, the five provinces with the highest amounts of checks returned for insufficient funds were Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, and Bursa, respectively.
