The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, made statements regarding vessel traffic through Turkey's straits in the first nine months of 2024. Minister Uraloğlu noted that Turkish straits have experienced a busy period in terms of commercial and transport vessel passage. He stated, "In the Istanbul and Çanakkale Straits, a total of 65,807 vessel movements occurred in the January-September period of 2024. Over the past 20 years, 1.9 million vessels have passed through our straits. These crossings significantly contribute to our country's economy, which holds critical importance in international maritime transport. With the projects we have implemented, we continue to move our country to the forefront in the international maritime arena."

Minister Uraloğlu reported that 3,760 vessels passed through the Çanakkale Strait in September, of which 860 were tankers carrying hazardous materials, including oil, amounting to 47,343,491 tons of cargo, with 18,282,121 tons being hazardous. He explained, "The number of vessels passing through the Çanakkale Strait in the January-September period increased by 3.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching 34,646. During these vessel movements, 7,791 were hazardous material tankers, transporting a total of 453,746,887 tons of cargo, including 157,005,205 tons of hazardous materials."

Minister Uraloğlu also highlighted that 3,302 vessels passed through the Istanbul Strait in September, with 785 of these being tankers carrying hazardous materials. The cargo amounted to 35,473,199 tons, with 15,307,099 tons classified as hazardous. He stated, "The number of vessels passing through the Istanbul Strait in the January-September period increased by 7.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching 31,161. The number of hazardous material-carrying tankers was 7,302. In this period, a total of 342,936,330 tons of cargo was transported, including 137,623,581 tons of hazardous materials."
